Dressing
for Iowa Weather
Spring - March, April, and May
Spring weather in Iowa is quite variable. Because the temperatures fluctuate
greatly, it is best to dress in layers. A combination of long- and short-sleeved
shirts, sweaters, and lightweight jackets provide the most flexibility. You will
want to bring an umbrella and perhaps a raincoat. Bring shoes that offer the
best protection against the rain.
Summer - June, July, and August
In summer, the higher temperatures and humidity can be uncomfortable at
times. You may wish to bring lightweight clothing, including short-sleeved shirts
and shorts. Open-toed shoes and sandals are fine for this season only. A
lightweight sweater will provide comfort during the evening or in
air-conditioned buildings.
Fall - September, October, and November
Fall weather is similar to spring. While usually comfortable, mornings and
evenings tend to be cooler than mid-day. Layering of clothing is again a very
effective response to temperature changes. Medium-weight jackets, sweaters, and
long-sleeved clothing will provide added comfort.
Winter - December, January, and February
Winter weather can be quite harsh, as well as unpredictable. Layering of
clothing is essential. Bring heavy sweaters and a heavyweight coat. Leave
short-sleeved clothing at home. A warm hat, gloves, wool scarf, and sturdy
walking boots will provide maximum protection against cold temperatures, wind,
and snow.
Each season is beautiful in its own way. So, whenever you come to Iowa, you
will have the opportunity to enjoy one of these magnificent seasons.
